Things to do in your garden in March
A list of tasks to take care of in your garden this month.
March is when spring arrives, and with our gardens spring into life. The days get longer and warmer, which gives you the opportunity to tick things off your gardening “to do” list. This month we can sow seeds, cut back winter shrubs and make sure everything is tidy.

The list below will help you stay on track in your garden this month:
-
Spring prune roses –
Prune bush and climbing roses early in the month. Remove any dead, diseased, dying, crossing, rubbing growth. Cut to form an open centre with stems that grow outwards and not across each other.
-
Pot on autumn and winter-sown plants –
Plant seedlings into larger pots once they become large enough to handle.
-
Sow annual seeds –
Sow seeds for flowers in the summer such as sweet peas, and annual climbers such as black-eyed susan.
-
Continue weeding borders –
Hoe annual weeds and keep on top of any new weeds coming through. You can continue to mulch your borders to keep them under control.
-
Lift and divide congested perennials –
Use two forks back-to-back to split thick roots (e.g. Hostas) and use a spade to cut through clumps of grasses.
-
Top-dress pots –
Improve the appearance of your containers, and add nutrients by topping them with fresh compost.
-
Begin mowing the lawn –
Only do this if needed and only on dry days.
-
Cut back plants grown for colourful winter stems –
Prune willows and dogwoods early in the month. Cut them right back to encourage vigorous, new growth.
-
Plant summer-flowering bulbs –
For summer displays plant bulbs such as Alliums, Freesias, Lilies and Crocosmia, as the soil starts to warm up.
-
Deadhead spring flowers –
Keep on top of deadheading to prevent spring bulbs and winter bedding plants from setting seed.
-
Feed ericaceous plants –
Use an ericaceous fertiliser to feed shrubs such as Azaleas, Camellias, Pieris and Rhododendrons.
-
Keep glasshouses ventilated –
Open greenhouse windows on warm/sunny days to stop the humidity from building up too much.
-
Remove greenhouse shading –
Take down bubblewrap and insulation to allow more light in as temperatures warm up.
